Attorney Helene Horn Figman combines the specialized legal knowledge that a successful employment law practice requires with the range of skills and perspectives uniquely suited to the small and mid-size business client.
A member of the Massachusetts Bar for over 30 years, Attorney Figman has successfully litigated before all courts in Massachusetts and the United States District Court. She has also represented corporations and individuals before the M.C.A.D. (Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination), E.E.O.C. (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission), and the Division of Unemployment Assistance.
As an administrative hearings officer for four years she presided over a dozen cases of discrimination for the M.C.A.D. during which she issued comprehensive decisions after hearing witness testimony and receiving documentary evidence.
On behalf of business owners, she has negotiated labor contracts and represented management in grievance hearings at the American Arbitration Association.
For the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers, she chaired a three-member panel investigating attorney malfeasance. She ruled on evidence and procedures as she controlled aggressive counsel and witnesses for both sides. Both the Board of Bar Overseers and the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court unanimously affirmed the panel’s findings.
Currently Attorney Figman serves an arbitrator for the Legal Fee Arbitration Board of the Massachusetts Bar Association.
In addition to her private legal practice and administrative judicial duties, Attorney Figman has designed, organized and led numerous employment related education programs in both academic and workplace settings -- from both a legal and human resources perspective. For example, as a visiting lecturer in employment law at Bridgewater State College she has taught classes in contracts and labor law. While in an HR consulting role, she has also conducted numerous team building and motivational workshops for small business.
On a day-to-day basis she has routinely researched, established, updated and maintained personnel policies for dozens of organizations, both for-profit and non-profit. Policies cover such areas as job descriptions, performance evaluations, discrimination, discipline, hiring, termination procedures, return to work, leaves of absence and workplace conduct.
